MAKE A PLASTIC WORM HOUSE FOR INSIDE OR OUTSIDE:
Make sure you have an adult help you with all the steps with a picture of Organic Steve next to them!
You will need:
A 14-18 gallon plastic storage bin with a lid (We reccommend rubbermaid bins because they don't crack and are easier to cut).
A sharp box cutting knife
Shredded paper
Spray bottle with water
1/2 gallon of fine, organic, dirt (no potting soil) or pete moss
Kitchen/garden scraps
1 pound of red worms
Optional: super glue and fine plastic mesh
- Cut 2-3, 1 inch by 1 inch holes on the lowest part of
each of the four sides of the box, along with the bottom of the box. Be sure to always be safe when using any sharp object to cut. - Optional (but reccommended for cleanliness): Carefully
cut fine plastic mesh into 2 inch by 2 inch squares. Put on glooves and apply a circle of glue around a hole. Quickly press plastic mesh over hole and glue. Repeat this step for each of the holes. - Wait for the glue to completely dry (if superglue is used then it takes no time at all, just make sure that the glue is OK to use around water).
- Now, take the shredded paper and put a 2 to 3 inch layer of it in the bottom of the Worm House.
- Spray the shredded paper with the water bottle until damp, but don't get it too wet.
- Pour the 1/2 gallon of dirt or pete moss over the damp shredded paper.
- Take the kitchen scraps and put them on top of the bin. Melons, apples, and soft vegetables are great things to start a bin off with. These are favorite foods of Wormy's family!
- Pour the 1 pound of worms in the bin.
- Put on the lid and place bin in a lighted area so that your little friends know they belong in their Worm House and not outside.
- Wormy's family now has a house and plenty of food to eat right out of your kitchen, yard, or garden. Make sure to feed these worms your food scraps every day so they don't go hungary.
